Mahesh Babu was born on August 9, , in Madras, Tamil Nadu, into a Telugu family.

His father is actor Krishna Babu, and his mother is Indira.

He is the fourth of five siblings, with older siblings Ramesh Babu, Padmavathi, and Manjula, and a younger sister, Priyadarsini.

His family is originally from Burripalem in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. Mahesh spent most of his childhood in Madras, where he was looked after by his maternal grandmother, Durgamma, and the rest of his family.
